STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Pennsylvania school districts maintain professionally trained teams, known as SAP teams, to identify issues that act as barriers to a student’s success. These issues may include, but are not limited to, use of alcohol, nicotine, or other drugs, mental health concerns, or assistance in coping with trauma or abuse. The membership of the SAP team varies between school districts, but may include guidance counselors, the school nurse, teachers, administration, school support staff, or liaisons from county human service agencies that act as a link to various community resources. SAP team members do not diagnose, treat or refer to treatment, but may refer a student to the county liaison for further screening, assessment, and referral to needed supports.

MAKE A REFERRAL

Anyone can refer a student to the SAP program, including family, teachers, school staff, or other students. A student in need of support may also go directly to the SAP team for help. Once a referral is received, a member of the SAP team will contact the student’s parent(s) or guardian. Consent from the student’s parent(s) or guardian must be obtained before any interventions are initiated. Once consent is obtained, a plan is developed to assist the student based upon identified needs. Participation in the program is voluntary. See the school icon boxes below to find the SAP team contact in your school.

Several local school districts maintain an online SAP referral process, indicated by the aSAP icons in the boxes below. Please click on the aSAP icon to complete an online referral.

PAYMENT FOR SERVICES

There is no charge for participation in the SAP program. Financing of follow-up treatment services that may be recommended is covered through the student’s medical insurance when possible. If the student does not have medical insurance coverage for the services recommended, or the deductibles or co-pays of this insurance create a hardship for families, the involved county human service agencies possess funding to cover many of the potential interventions.
